CIM • Chartered Institute of Marketing
ISMM • Institute of Sales and Marketing Management
IDM • Institute of Direct Marketing
MRS • Market Research Society

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is the world's oldest and largest marketing organisation. CIM offers several courses stemming from the CIM Introductory Certificate in Marketing (level 3) which requires no experience to CIM Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing which is aimed at senior management (level 7). The CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing is the most popular course which generally is studied over a period of one year and contains four modules. There are also specific marketing courses, for example aimed at tourism marketing professionals. CIM qualifications can lead to becoming a chartered marketer.

Compared to CIM the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management (ISMM) is the UK's only professional body for salespeople. An ISMM marketing course has full recognition from the UK Government regulatory body Ofqual. ISMM offer a wide range of sales and marketing courses and training events from those starting their careers to more experienced professionals.

The Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM) is the newer instiution which differs from CIM and ISMM in that they offer direct, data and digital marketing courses and training. The IDM itself has awarded 1,500 digital marketing courses to over 25,000 professionals. If you are interested in digital marketing it might also be worth investigating the CAM Foundation.

The Market Research Society (MRS) offers marketing courses for research professionals. MRS qualifications are widely recognised as being of high value within the research sector with candidates registering from more than 40 countries worldwide.

In summary, for a traditional but solid marketing course, have a look at CIM. For a more sales (with marketing) orientated course, ISMM might be of greater interest. If you would like to pursue a career in digital and direct marketing then one of the IDM training courses would likely be of interet, (it is worthwile comparing IDM courses to the digital courses offered by the CAM Foundation). Lastly, for those interested in research within a marketing context then the MRS would be best suited.
