The Institute of Tourist Guiding courses do not require the student to have experience or qualifications.

Level 4 Blue Badge course
This course is aimed at those interested in becoming a professional tourist guide. An essential part of the Level 4 examinations for Blue Badge guides is the Background Knowledge paper. This is a stand-alone, national qualification which is recognised by all tourist boards and is aimed particularly at those people who are considering applying for a Blue Badge Level 4 course.

The Background Knowledge paper forms one module of the Blue Badge Level 4 Qualification. The BK paper is written nationally on a biannual basis and is a transferable module. Any Level 3 guides hoping to progress to Level 4 may sit the Background Knowledge paper before beginning their training programme. It may also be taken by independent, external candidates.

Level 4 London Blue Badge course
There has been a training course for students wishing to become professional tourist guides in London for over 50 years. The course prepares student guides for the Institute of Tourist Guiding examinations. On passing these written and practical examinations, the guide is awarded a Blue Badge, which is the industry recognised symbol of professionalism in tourist guiding.
